The organisation started in 1996 and is an initiative of St Ambrose parish where we seek to assist those in need, particularly the marginalised.
The core of the work is done by volunteers who visit the people of the area, assist with transport to medical appointments, provide meals to people under stress and generally “ lend a hand” when need is identified and extend hospitality in whatever capacity they are able.
We aim to respond to a need when it is drawn to our attention, particularly for the lonely, isolated and marginalised. For this reason we mostly operate quite informally. In a small township it is sometimes difficult to see the distinction between welcomed and unwelcomed assistance so we are conscious of preserving the dignity and privacy of the recipients of our services. If we are aware of a need where we can offer assistance we do so, but leave it to the proposed recipient to accept or reject the offer. We rely on requests received to be able to offer assistance.
We recognise that whilst many of these situations occur for a prolonged period, some are a result of a change of circumstances or temporary setback.
Some volunteers may have been regularly visiting a lonely or infirm person for a “cuppa & a chat” but others might simply offer to assist with shopping for someone temporarily housebound after a medical procedure. Someone new to the district or school might appreciate an introduction to a club, advice on local service providers and child friendly parks, or just be happy to have someone interested enough to welcome them as a new friend.
It may be that what is required is more than social. Many people who are under duress (e.g. caring for a sick family member, a new baby in the house, recovering from an operation) may have difficulty preparing a nutritious meal. The school has a “food bank” resource and Ambrose Care may also be able to assist.
Ambrose Care is a not-for-profit organisation.
Funding is derived from:
As Ambrose Care is a volunteer based organisation. We welcome new volunteers and are appreciative of the talents all our volunteers bring. Commitment does not need to be onerous. As an example we have a number of people willing to assist at funeral catering e.g . by providing food, helping to serve, and preparing and cleaning up the venue. As these events occur irregularly, volunteers are contacted at short notice and if available at the time are invited to assist. Volunteers feel happy to be able to share their talents and those serving enjoy the company of co-workers in this community venture.
If you would like to help in any way contact Bernadette at the Parish Office who can provide details.
